Jared Justen is an indie singer-songwriter known for his genre-defying, emotionally complex sound and carefully crafted lyrics. Raised on a diverse range of late-90s music, his music is characterized by its bold exploration of musical possibilities and introspective themes. Drawing inspiration from artists like Ben Harper, Devendra Banhart, José González, and Pete Seeger, Justen’s unique blend of influences sets him apart in the music industry.
Primarily self-taught, Justen’s musical journey began when he picked up the guitar in college. He later ventured into keys, singing, songwriting, and music production. His self-produced debut album, “Sky Align,” released in 2018, introduced listeners to his compelling genre-fluid sound, combining elements of pop, alternative rock, folk jazz, and neo-soul. His sophomore album, “Wolves Teeth,” dropped during the 2020 Covid pandemic and continued to showcase his ability to delve into profound themes and emotions.
Now, in late 2023, Jared Justen has release his highly anticipated third album, “A Bend in the Light.” This album explores the intricate interplay between different elements, both physical and symbolic, with imagery of lighthouses, sunlight, searchlights, and water serving as metaphors for life’s complexities. Justen’s tenderly emotive vocal style takes center stage, supported by gentle acoustic soundscapes and electrifying punk-infused vibes.
While his music often leans towards melancholic introspection, Jared Justen embraces a thoughtful range of moods in his songwriting. He sees songwriting as a tool for understanding and coping with his various emotions and believes that it helps him feel more authentic. As he puts it, “It’s easier for me to write sad songs than happy ones, but I try to use writing as a tool for understanding and coping with all my moods and feelings. It kinda puts me back together. Makes me feel more real. It feels good to get it out––whatever it may be.”
